Hi, I’m Megan.
I’m a writer-director from small-town Oregon. I grew up Quaker, which honed my aptitude for deep listening and meaning-making from a young age. I was raised along with my two older brothers by our single mom, Robin Weaver, who spent much of our childhood battling lymphoma, pulmonary fibrosis, and congestive heart failure.
I went to a small college in my hometown, where I intended to major in psychology. But I couldn’t stay away from the theater building, and while I neglected my required psych courses, I ended up devouring the entire theatre curriculum in just two years. I officially switched majors, but was still hungry for more training – so I enrolled in the O’Neill Theater Center’s semester-long National Theater Institute in Connecticut, where I met the fellow students who would become my artistic family. I moved to New York City after graduation, co-founded my theater company FullStop Collective with my fellow NTI alumni, and started building a life as an artist.
As a director I specialize in devised plays and new musicals, often using immersive and/or interactive formats. I work collaboratively across disciplines, integrating film and digital media, mask and puppetry, live music, dance and found spaces, to create vibrant original works.
But my first love has always been writing, and in 2017 I pivoted towards writing for the screen. I write fantastical coming-of-age dramas about death, love, and growing up. My mother’s long, complicated health battle, and her heartbreaking death in 2010, infuse everything I write in some form.
My ultimate dream is to write and direct dystopian and fantasy dramas for prestige TV and film. Until then, I spend my time directing indie film & theater projects, creating content for progressive business leaders, and writing every day. I also work as a strategic advisor and culture building consultant for large, complex organizations, which has recently led me to an exciting new strategic planning position with the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
As a director, I’ve been honored with two AriZoni Theatre Awards, a KCACTF Meritorious Achievement Award, a Puffin Foundation Grant for independent theater artists, and the Northern Trust/Virginia Piper Enrichment Award, which funded my month-long residency in Bali to study the island’s mask and dance traditions.
As a writer, my work has been recognized by the New York International Fringe Festival, the Austin Film Festival, ScreenCraft, the AriZoni Theatre Awards and Indie Theatre Now.
I’ve trained with experimental theater groups The Wooster Group, SITI Company and Sojourn Theatre. I have a BA in Theatre from George Fox University and an MFA in Directing from Arizona State University.
I live in Urbana, Illinois. When I’m not developing new scripts and projects, I practice Ashtanga yoga, teach myself piano tunes, and go for for long hikes and bike rides all over Central Illinois.
